Despite the success of many charter schools in educating children in impoverished, urban areas, a persistent knock against them is that charters lead to racial segregation. That is, by culling predominantly African-American and Hispanic children, charters are rolling back earlier integration efforts.

But the uncomfortable truth is that there is a type of freely chosen segregation that may further the goal of educational achievement.

Of course, many so-called reformers would disagree.

In other words, if segregation comes about because of charter schools, it’s cool.
